Greetings UUMC Family & Friends
Here are your updates from your family at University UMC for Friday, March 27th, 2020
As of last Friday, March 20th the leadership of UUMC has decided to cancel all in-person worship services and move to online worship services only until further notice.
This week’s online worship service will be a pre-recorded service. It will be go live online on Sunday morning at 8:30am on all our online platforms:
E-bulletins will be sent out Sunday morning by 8am for anyone that is wanting to keep up with your routine of worshiping on Sunday mornings at 8:30am, 9:45am, or 11am. Our Online Worship Team will be available from 8:30am – 11:30am to welcome you, take your prayer requests, and answer any questions you may have.
*For anyone who is unable to receive an E-bulletin, we will have hard copies printed and available in the pick-up box in front of the Prayer Labyrinth.
Updates from the Church Office
In keeping with the current public health order in place, the church office is still closed to the public until further notice. There will be a staff member at the church between 9am-3pm to answer phone calls, receive mail/packages, and just have some sort of presence so that the church building is not completely vacant and therefore a target for vandalism. Of course, any of our staff that does not feel comfortable leaving their home right now has been allowed to opt out of these shifts and work remotely from home.
All our UUMC staff are still hard at work and will be reachable via phone and email during their normal office hours. If you are needing anything from any of them please feel free to get in contact with them during those times or call the church office and they can transfer you to them.
Minister on Call
We know this time of social distancing can feel isolating. If you would like to talk to a minister for prayer or just a listening ear, we are here for you. Call the church at 575-522-8220 and ask for the minister on call. If you reach the automated system, select option 1. We have a great team lined up ready to talk and pray with you.
The Garden that never closes…
The doors may be closed, but our garden is always open. We encourage anyone who is needing a bit of fresh air and room to stretch you legs to come by and enjoy the beautiful outdoor space that your gifts of time, talent, and tithe have created. Just remember to keep 6ft of space around you and if you would like to do some weeding, pruning, or other garden chores that you bring your own equipment.
As we traverse this new landscape we have started a series of online devotionals to keep everyone’s spiritual health at its best. If you haven’t already, make sure you follow us on on Facebook and check the UUMC website regularly. Our director of Outreach, Brian Townsend, will do a live online devotional every Wednesday evening and Sunday morning.
Brian will also be offering a Sunday evening Zoom Bible study. Contact Brian directly for more details or to join (firstname.lastname@example.org)
“Little Free Food Pantry”
We’ve converted our “little lending library” into a “little free food pantry” . If you know someone who is in need of a little help with a meal send them to the garden at UUMC. Our staff will make sure this gets restocked every weekday. If you would like to donate food items to be put in these snack sacks or for our regular food pantry, please drop them off on the labeled cart outside the church office door Mon-Fri from 9am-3pm.
Food Pantries @ UUMC
One of our most vital ministries is our Food Pantries. During times of crisis such as now, they are needed more then ever. For the last 2 months our food pantries have seen a dramatic increase in the number of households they serve (last pantry we served almost 90 households), and with the current crisis they expect those numbers to continue to grow.
If you have extra food to give your donations can be dropped off by the church office door Mon-Fri 9am-3pm.
If you have time to spare and are not part of a vulnerable population we are in need of volunteers as well.
Our next regular food pantry will be Friday, April 3rd from 9am-11am. We are in need of volunteers to come Thursday, April 2nd at 1pm to help individually package the food. Then on Friday it will be handed out via a Drive-Thru service.
Our next Mobile Food Pantry (Specifically for families of University Hills Elementary) will be Friday, April 10th from 2-3pm. Volunteers are needed at 12pm to help unload the truck. We will hand these food boxes in a similar drive-thru fashion.
Stewardship in Trying Times
During hard times like now we know everyone is looking for things to do, to donate, to give. But sometimes the best thing you can do for your local church and other nonprofits is just financially support them so they can continue to financially support the ones who are working hard to provide the services that our communities need the most right now.
Your gifts of tithe and offering go to help provide things like…
- food supplies for our food pantry
- salaries for our church staff (who are not eligible for unemployment benefits)
- utilities to keep Bright Beginnings Learning Center open to those families who need it most (Emergency responders, healthcare professionals, food service workers, etc.)
- Equipment necessary to keep our church community in connection even when we may be physically distant.
These are just a couple of reasons why this, your church, needs your continued support now more than ever.
To give to the mission of UUMC you can go online to uumc-lc.org/give and set up recurring giving through our secure online giving site. You can also donate online via our Facebook page. We will have staff checking in at the church throughout the week, so if you are not comfortable with online giving you can always mail your offering to the church,
2000 S. Locust St. Las Cruces, NM 88001
We also hope to have a secured drive up drop box set up within the next week or so for anyone who would prefer to drop off their donation (check back for updates on that).
