Here are your updates from your family at University UMC for Wednesday, April 1st, 2020
A Message from Pastor Heike
Dear church family,
I learned a new word this week (someone emailed it to me); “yokefellow”. What a way to describe what our mission is this year. To be, and to become, more and more yokefellows.
Folks who are willingly and joyfully picking up HIS yoke. The yokes have different shapes, for sure. Some of us are worried about the safety of their relatives, some can’t find enough food to feed their families, some of us do not know how to fill the hours of the day shut in their homes and some have just lost their jobs. Some of you send me messages to please pray for their granddaughter who is working day and night in a hospital in New York, some of you care for peace in the neighbors house.
Yokefellows, we are the ones who are walking together towards Jerusalem this week. Watching and experiencing the king on a donkey making his entry into the city. We are the the ones who will wave our palms and welcome and cheer for the one, the only one, who will bring us peace and life. We are called to shout at the top of our lungs: “Hosanna!”, help savior!
And he will answer!
Because he always does.
Peace to you, yokefellows.
God’s Pantry needs your support
One of our most vital ministries is our Food Pantry. During times of crisis such as now, It is needed more then ever. For the last 2 months we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of households they serve (last pantry we served almost 90 households), and with the current crisis they expect those numbers to continue to grow.
We partner with Roadrunner food bank to get a majority of our food supply for our food pantry. However, because Roadrunner food bank gets a lot of its supply from the overstock of grocery stores, they too are running low on suoply. We are also unable to get bulk supplies from our local stores due to the purchase limits in place. So If you have extra food donations to give your donations can be dropped off by the church office door Mon-Fri 9am-3pm. Some items the Pantry is specifically looking for are
- pasta sauce
- canned fruit
- peanut butter
If you have time to spare and are not part of a vulnerable population we are in need of volunteers as well.
Our next regular food pantry will be this Friday, April 3rd from 9am-11am. We are in need of volunteers to come Thursday, April 2nd at 1pm to help individually package the food. Then on Friday it will be handed out via a Drive-Thru service.
Holy Week Worship Services
Holy week starts this Sunday with our celebration of Palm Sunday. We will once again be celebrating this holiest of weeks together online. We will be posting an online service on the following days
Sunday, April 5th @ 8:30am (Palm Sunday)
Thursday, April 9th @ 10am (Maundy Thursday)
Friday, April 10th @ 10am (Good Friday)
Sunday, April 12th @ 8:30am (Easter Sunday)
All services will be posted on all three of our online platforms (UUMC website, Facebook page, & YouTube Channel).
E-bulletins for all the services will be sent out 30 minutes before the services go live. Our Online Worship Team will be available for 1 hour once the service goes live to welcome you, take your prayer requests, and answer any questions you may have.
*For anyone who is unable to receive an E-bulletin, we will have hard copies printed and available in the pick-up box in front of the Prayer Labyrinth at UUMC.
If you haven’t already, make sure you follow us on on Facebook and check the UUMC website regularly for your weekly dose of spiritual nourishment. Our director of Outreach, Brian Townsend, will do a live online devotional every Wednesday evening and Sunday morning.
Brian will also be offering a Sunday evening Zoom Bible study. Contact Brian directly for more details or to join (firstname.lastname@example.org)
And Pastor George Miller of El Calvario UMC will be hosting the weekly Thursday evening Bible study via Zoom video conference as well. To sign-up for that Bible study contact Pastor George at email@example.com
Shake your Palm Leaf!
Since we can’t all be together to wave our palms, we thought we’d try the next best thing. Just click the button below to download your very own Palm Branch cut out. Print it out, decorate it however you want, and then make sure to have it handy this Sunday for our online Palm Sunday service. Make sure to take a picture of you and your palm to share with the church. We are going to make a slideshow of everyone at home with their palms worshiping together!
You can send your pictures to the church office at firstname.lastname@example.org or upload them to our dropbox
